MES/GES Olympics - Greenwood/Midway Elementary Schools received a grant of $6,000 from the Friends of the Greenwood Improvement Society. The Province had advertised grant money available for promoting the Olympic Torch Relay.
The school is hosting their own Olympics with opening and closing ceremonies and two days of Olympic-type events. They have hosted their Opening Ceremonies with both schools split into 9 teams representing different participating countries. The teams made flags, banners, researched a male and female athlete from the country, and produced a chant. They downloaded the anthems from each country and the students marched in for the ceremonies.
The first week they spent the day at Phoenix Ski Hill competing in luge, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snow sculpting. The second week they where in Midway for skating events, curling, snow relays and other activities. Closing ceremonies was held on January 21st. They have purchased Olympic prizes for the top three countries and will score on points for participation, sportsmanship, etc. An engraving store in Kelowna (ties to the school -grandson in kindergarten) has donated a medal for every participant.
The schools created momentum and atmosphere for the Olympic Torch that went through Greenwood on January 24, 2010. The students will learn and hopefully be excited for the upcoming Olympics. In the end, any remaining funds will go towards sleds and snowshoes for the schools.
